Screw conveyors are used to transport bulk, small-sized, dusty, powdery materials in horizontal, vertical or inclined directions. It is not advisable to use screws to move sticky, highly abrasive, or compactible substances.

Screw conveyors can also be used as feeders, dispensers, or mixers. So-called differential screws are used to mix materials, in which the screws of two adjacent screws rotate in opposite directions.

Augers are used in construction materials manufacturing plants, in the mining and chemical industries, in the feed milling, flour milling, and woodworking industries. In agriculture, screw conveyors are used to move grain from trucks and grain carriers to grain storage bins. The grain conveyor auger can be driven by an electric motor or a tractor engine via a power take-off mechanism.
